At the weekend I was out and about in the Yorkshire Dales with my camera. I got the shock of my life when I took my Sigma 10-20 wide angle out of the bag and it rattled. A heart stopping moment. Rotate the lens in my hand one more time; was I imagining it? No - it rattles like a kaleidoscope!!
Taking off the lens cap reveals a smashed UV filter. Phew! It goes to prove that putting a filter on your lens can save your lens one day. Maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow but in my case it was that day. Something had struck the camera bag in the car boot/trunk and without the filer the lens barrel would be ruined. Lucky is wasn't a strike on the camera body end of the lens but once in a while you get break.
77mm filters are not cheap but there are some superb sellers on eBay that cut the highstreet shop prices in half (50% less - amazing). denise.camera and uk-photogear being two such sellers. Just for good measure I've added a 150mm macro lens to the purchases so it should lead to some cracking stock photo shots. An new area I think will be fruitful very shortly.
